Books Quotes of Holiness by Grace, by Bryan Chapel
“The historic Protestant doctrine is that we are not only justified by faith rather than our works, but we are also sanctified by faith rather than our works” (Tim Keller).
Problems came, however, when patterns of personal conduct became almost as much an emphasis in evangelical preaching and teaching as the message of God’s grace. As a consequence, people began to think of their conduct as a qualification for god’s acceptance. P11
P11 (Lordship)。
A grace focus that undermines Christ’s own demand for obedience denies us knowledge of and intimacy with him. This is not grace. P12.
As the assurance of God’s love allows us to cease striving to please him for our own benefit, our good works will begin reflecting more of the selfless righteousness that is truly holy. P12
Our performance is not a means of establishing or maintaining our salvation, but it confirms the biblical emphasis on obedience as a gratitude response to God’s mercy. P13
6. 当我们面对现实,知道自己的行为表现不足以赢得神的恩惠时,我们就会明白必须依靠神的良善,而不是自己的良善。P31;
When I face the reality of the inadequacy of my works to merit God’s favor, then I recognize that I must depend on his goodness and not on mine. P24
God promises to bless obedience by using it for his purpose. The blessings that result, however, should be seen less as credit for our goodness and more as evidence of his faithfulness to his purpose. P25
Our God is not moved by the deeds that we trophy, but by the desperation that we acknowledge as our own. P26
To experience God’s grace, I must readily and repeatedly confess my won hopeless condition. What makes me willing to do this is the knowledge that it is y desperation that inclines God’s hearts toward my own. P28
Grace distinguishes its possessors by their joy. P35
11. 当我们对自己的罪感到极为羞愧以至流泪的地步时,我们才真正地完全明白恩典。P51;
We know grace in its fullness when we are broken to the point of tears over the shame of our sin. P36.
Spiritual pride dies when we realize that all of our comparison with others based on relative levels of apparent goodness count for nothing in terms of gaining us standing before God. P43
We still do devotions; but we don’t beat ourselves up when we miss and we try not to applaud ourselves when we manage to be consistent. P58
Spiritual change is more than a matter of the practice of spiritual disciplines, or even of resolving to act on the reality of our union with Christ. We progress in sanctification as we humbly and prayerfully depend upon the Holy Spirit to mature our wills and transforms our affections so that we stay on the course that he has designed. P61.
Few of us will believe that we are in dire need of repentance if we base our understanding of our need on comparisons to the obvious failings of others. It is the comparison to God’s holiness that makes what is minor in the world’s eyes wrenching to the Christian heart. P74
Repentance is not so much a doing as a depending. It is not so much a striving for pardon as a posture of humility. P82
Repentance is not a turning from one category of works to another; rather it is a turning from human works entirely to God. P83;
We access God’s grace by acknowledging what he tells us about the persuasiveness and power of the temptation we face, and then by resisting it through confidence in the resources he provides. P93;
Temptation has terrible power. Even those with great spiritual privilege are not immune to its influence. P97
“…our duty and God’s grace are nowhere opposed I the matter of sanctification; for one absolutely supposes the other. We cannot perform our duty without the grace of God; nor does God give his grace for any other purpose than what we may perform our duty” – John Owen. P102
A good analogy to help us understand the relationship between God’s love and our progress in becoming Christlike (i.e., our progressive sanctification) is our children’s obedience. My child’s compliance with my standards and his resistance to counter impulses dot not cause or deter my love. He is entirely my child, and has the affection of my whole hearts solely as a consequence of that relationship. Still, in order for him to grow and to have the parental approval that every child desires, he must obey me. P104.
“When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upo by breas that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved my so and sought my good”. (Charles Spurgeon). P108
No sin can be crucified in heart or life, unless it is first pardoned in conscience. P108.
We do not abandon our responsibility when we confess uncertainty and act charitably toward those who differ with us regarding prudential choices. In fact, this is our biblical responsibility. P120.
