Books Quotes of The Discipline of Grace, by Jerry Bridges
An all-too-common misconception of the Christian life: the thinking that, although we are saved by grace, we earn or forfeit God’s blessing in our daily lives by our performance. P5.
Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God’s grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God’s grace. P9.
3. 法利赛型的信徒下意识地以为是他们藉自己的行为赢得神的赐福。P25;
Pharisee-type believers unconsciously think they have earned God’s blessing through their behavior. P13.
God never intended that we relate to Him directly. Our own performance is never good enough to be acceptable to Him. The only way we can relate to God is through the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ. P13.
Few things cut the verve of desire and earnest effort to change like a sense of guilt. P14.
Duty or guilt may motivate us for a while, but only a sense of Christ’s love for us will motivate us for a lifetime. P16
Preaching the gospel to ourselves every day addresses both the self-righteous Pharisee and the guilt-laden sinner that dwell in our hearts. Because the gospel is only for sinners, preaching it to ourselves every day reminds us that we are indeed sinners in need of God’s grace. P17
As Christians, should we view ourselves as saints or sinners? My answer is, both. We should always view ourselves both in terms of what we are in Christ, that is, saints, and what we are in ourselves, namely, sinners. To help us understand this twofold view of ourselves, consider Jesus an analogy. In His own person he was sinless, but as our representative He assumes our guilt. P31;
Unless we learn to live daily by faith in (that is, by reliance on) His righteousness, however, our perception of our standing before God will vary depending on our good or bad performance. P40.
I must continue to renounce any confidence in my own goodness and place my confidence solely in Christ every day of my life, not only for my eternal salvation, but for my daily acceptance before a holy God. P42
…this propitiation is appropriated by us as sinners through faith in His blood. The blood of Christ, referring to His death, is to be the object of our faith by which we appropriate His propitiation. P48
It is not our contrition or sorrow for our sin, it is not our repentance, it is not even the passing of a certain number of hours during whih we feel we are on some kind of probagion that cleanse us. It is the blood of Christ, she once for all on Calvary 2000 years ago but appropriated daily or even many times a day, that cleanses our conscience and gives us a renewed sense of peach with God. P49
…if you are not firmly rooted in the gospel and have not learned to preach it to yourself every day, you will soon become discouraged and will slack off in your pursuit of holiness. P51
To say to the slave who has not been emancipated, ‘do not behave as a slave’ is to mock his enslavement. But to say the same to the slave who has been set free is the necessary appeal to put into effect the privilege and rights of his liberation. P68 (re: do not let sin reign).
What are the principles of grace? … The first is the forgiveness of all our sins and the unconditional acceptance of our person through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. The 2nd is that the deliverance from the dominion of sin and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit in us through our union with Christ. P85
The solution for these people (not reborn) is not to change their conduct so that theuy might see some evidences of regeneration. The solution is to come to Jesus, renouncing any confidence in their own goodness, confessing themselves to be sinners in the sight of God and trusting entirely in His atoning work. They will then be truly justified (saved from the penalty of sin)… P90

Beholding the glory of the Lord is one means the Spirit uses to transform us… Our specific responsibility in the pursuit of holiness… is to behold the glory of the Lord as it is displayed in the gospel… Therefore, we must ‘preach the gospel to ourselves every day’ P100-104.
James Fraser said: But while the conscience retains the charge of guilt, condemnation, and wrath, there cannot be purity, or sincerity of heart toward God, or sincerity of the love of God. Human nature is so formed, that it cannot love any object that is adverse and terrible to it. P118
Prayer is the tangible expression of our dependence. P132

It is forgiveness shat sets a man working for God. He does not work in order to be forgiven, but because he has been forgiven and the consciousness of his sin being pardoned makes him long more for its entire removal than ever he did before.
