第669本:《得救的信心》书摘37则|《Romans: An Exposition of Chapter 10—Saving Faith》
1. In various ways, we are all liable to slip back to a trust in works. We would even think of our faith as if it were a work. P4
2. You are to be sympathetic, understanding, and patient, but if you become affected personally by their condition you will be reacting in a way that you should not. You must keep yourself in control. P6
3. If a man is saved it is because God saves him; if he is lost it is because he has not believed. P8
4. Therefore do not try to understand, do not try to reconcile prayer with the sovereignty of God. The Bible teaches me the sovereignty of God and, equally definitely, it teaches me the duty of prayer. I hold to that doctrine and I pray. I am not concerned about reconciling them. I cannot. Nobody else can. I imagine that in the glory we shall be given the explanation. P10
5. Here, then, is the question: Do you believe the doctrine enunciated in chapter 9 of the Epistle to the Romans? The best way of testing whether you do or do not is this: Do you long for the salvation of others? Are you praying for it? P11
6. I am of the opinion that the greatest danger confronting the Christian church and every individual Christian at this moment is to fail to understand and appreciate the absolute necessity of a precise, clear knowledge of the truth. P29
7. The moment men and women see this, they do it at once; and if this element of immediacy is not there, there is some misunderstanding somewhere. It is a righteousness provided by God. It is a free gift, and all I do is to hold out my hands to receive it; nothing else. P51
8. Any teaching concerning salvation which does not express itself in terms of the demands of the law of God is a false teaching. P54
9. And one of the purposes of salvation is to enable us to live a life such as is demanded by the holy law of God. It is a very dangerous teaching which says that the Christian now has a lower standard. P57
10. It was never meant to save, it was never meant but to bring home the knowledge of transgression and to establish guilt. That was its one and only purpose. P73
11. I say once more that the most ignorant, the most illiterate, and the most benighted can believe this message, and be saved by it in a second. That is the whole basis of missionary work. P87
12. So it is no use saying to people, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,’ because their answer is: ‘Who is Jesus Christ? What does believing in Jesus Christ mean?’ P130
13. Now the danger is that, in the anxiety to bring people to salvation, too little content may be given, so that if people merely say ‘Yes’ to something that is said to them, then all is thought to be well. I am just trying to show that that is not how the Apostles evangelised. P130
14. The principle, therefore, is this: a full and deep understanding of the whole of doctrine, thank God, is not essential to salvation. We ought to have it, and that is why we study these things, that we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of the Lord, but at the moment of belief and of salvation we do not need to know it all. To include it in the evangelistic message is to do violence to that message. P13
15. He did not say to them, ‘You can do nothing. You must wait until the Holy Spirit moves you. You must make sure whether you are elect or not.’ He preached, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins’ [Acts 2:37–38]. P139
16. It is this confession that ‘Jesus is the Lord’ and all that that means. It is this confession from the heart that ‘God has raised him from the dead’ and all that that means. And that is justification by faith and by faith alone. P140
17. The heart in Scripture very rarely means only the feelings. It includes that, and sometimes it only means that — the context will generally make it plain — but in the vast majority of instances, the word heart in Scripture means the centre, the very innermost citadel, of the personality. Or, if you like, it means the whole personality. P146
18. So when the Scripture says that with the heart we believe that God has raised Him from the dead, it means that with the whole of our being we believe that. ‘With the heart man believeth unto righteousness’: with the whole of his personality, not merely his feelings, not merely his intellect, but the totality of everything that he is. P146
19. There is such a thing as mistaking a theological intellectualism for saving faith. It is the danger of believing the doctrines of salvation instead of believing in the Person of Christ and having a living faith in Him. P158
20. conviction means that the truth has come to us with power. P166
21. ‘Faith,’ he says, ‘saving faith, is a certain conviction, wrought in the heart by the Holy Spirit, as to the truth of the gospel, and a hearty reliance (trust) on the promises of God in Christ.’ That is it! It is more than being aware of the truth, it is a reliance upon it, it is a committal of yourself to it and a casting of yourself utterly and entirely upon it. P17
22. You can believe with your mind that Jesus is the Son of God, you can have your head packed with theology, but unless you have felt your need of a Saviour, and unless you have committed yourself utterly to Him and rely only upon Him and give yourself to Him that He may save you, you have not got saving faith. P173
23. In other words, you can be a true believer without having this full assurance of salvation. P181
24. This distinction between accepting Christ as Saviour and taking Him as Lord is utterly unscriptural. P185
25. The Christian, in the eyes of the wise man of the world, has always been a fool. We cannot believe that Jesus is the Lord, and that God has raised Him from the dead, P203
26. What does ‘the name’ stand for? It is a Hebrew expression which is often used in the Old Testament and means the person himself. P244
27. Reading is supplementary — a good supplement, but never a substitute. It is when people substitute reading for preaching that disaster comes in. But reading as a supplement to the preaching is, of course, excellent. P272
28. It is not enough that we should be right. We can be right, and yet we can handle our subject or present it in such a thoroughly bad way that we do more harm than good. We must be right, not only in our doctrine and proof, but in our method also. P321
29. There is no greater proof, ultimately, of the truth of the Christian faith than fulfilled prophecy. It is one of our most powerful arguments. Let us never forget it. P324
30. The great danger that people fall into is this: they forget that an essential part of biblical teaching in connection with election and predestination is to assert, at the same time, our responsibility. If you preach that doctrine in such a way as to make each person an automaton or a machine, you are doing violence to the Scripture. The Apostle Paul, who preaches the doctrine so powerfully in Romans 9, is equally careful to assert our responsibility. P340
31. What I am trying to say is that there is never true joy until there has been a thorough preliminary ‘law-work’. It is only those who realise their state who rejoice when they hear the gospel. P350
32. We are too ready to repeat formulae; we are too ready to give assent to a kind of ‘believism’, and this is, of course, the sole explanation of the absence of a deep joy. P350
33. You have to ‘take time to be holy’. You have to take time to get a conviction of sin. You will never know what it is to be thrilled by the sight of the messenger coming across the top of the mountain unless you know what captivity is, unless you realise the truth about yourself. P351
34. But let us remember that, ‘A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still.’ P358
35. Ultimately, unbelief has nothing to do with intellect. P382
36. God has one method of salvation and it has always been the method that we have considered — that is, justification by faith only, not by works, not by nationality, not by birth and upbringing. P389
37. Are you filled with the Spirit? Is there a danger that somebody might think that you are filled with ‘new wine’ because you are so filled with the spirit of praise and of rejoicing? That is the New Testament Christian. P398
